Permaculture

The caretakers of Quail Springs are integrating permaculture design into their ongoing development of the farm and their stewardship of the flora and fauna in the surrounding lands.  Permaculture is one of the strands in our cultural basket that honors the land and all who dwell there.  To see some of our projects, visit the Permaculture Photo Gallery .

This is the definition we are using for permaculture:

Permaculture is the conscious design and maintenance of agriculturally productive ecosystems which have the diversity, stability and resilience of natural ecosystems. It is the harmonious integration of the landscape and people providing their food, energy, shelter, and other material and non-material needs in a sustainable way. Without permanent agriculture and the honoring of our interdependent relationship with all that sustains us, there is no possibility of a stable social order and the budding of intact, land-rooted culture.

Permaculture design is a system of assembling conceptual, material and strategic components in a pattern which functions to benefit life in all its forms. The philosophy behind permaculture is one of working with, rather than against, nature; protracted and thoughtful observation rather than protracted and thoughtless action; of looking at systems in all their functions and in their ecological wholeness, rather than asking only one yield of them; and of allowing systems to demonstrate their own evolutions.

Quail Springs is moving within the expansive perimeters of permaculture in a learning journey to restore and vitalize the land for many generations to come.
