Farm & Garden Internships

Hands-on service learning at Quail Springs’ 450 acre permaculture demonstration and education site in Southern California.

Spring dates:  April 5 - July 12
Fall dates:  August 16 - November 15

Food ForestActivities include permaculture gardening, farming and earthworks, seed saving, plant propagation, livestock care, milking, cheese making, yogurt, etc., butchering (not required), bread making, food preparation using fresh local ingredients, preserving the harvest, non-profit administration, general chores and community care. We also offer special segments covering a range of areas from natural building and watershed stewardship to carving, working with natural fibers, beekeeping, cooking in the earthen ovens, and more. The intern coordinator works with interns to match your area or areas of interest with projects on the farm.

Living Craft Project


Natural Building Intensive:   May 1 - June 15

StrawBaleWith the successful completion of the 2009 natural building apprenticeship, Living Craft Project is inviting six new dedicated students to join us for a 6 week natural building intensive.  Students will build a 150 square foot modified load-bearing strawbale cottage, and gain experience in finish work (hand-crafted earthen plasters and troweled earthen floors) on a 350 square foot strawbale home. The intensive modules lead students through both the structural and finish aspects of building an earthen home, with a high level of attention to craftsmanship and skill. Modules include: carpentry, wall & roof systems, materials harvesting & processing, earthen plasters, earthen floors, & clay artistry. Discussions include: foundation, passive solar & natural wall system design, & pattern language recognition.  Tuition: $3000. Sustainable Vocations prepares youth (ages 15-24) for diverse leadership roles that integrate sustainability into their communities, and provides an experiential introduction to green jobs.

Students earn a Permaculture Design Certification (72 hour course)

Cost: $1,500-2,500, sliding scale. Includes tuition, meals & camping nearby.

World-recognized, 72-hour certification courses covers sustainable living systems design for all landscapes and climates – with everything from food systems, water harvesting, waste cycling, home design, to climate care, and much more. Course produces ecological activists with design skills, and connects students to a global network of Permaculture contacts and projects.
