sunflowerPermaculture is a holistic approach to land use design, based on ecological principles and patterns aiming to create stable, productive systems that provide for human needs, harmoniously integrating the land with people.

World-recognized, 72-hour certification courses covers sustainable living systems design for all landscapes and climates – with everything from food systems, water harvesting, waste cycling, home design, to climate care, and much more. Course produces ecological activists with design skills, and connects students to a global network of Permaculture contacts and projects. Graduates receive a Certificate in Permaculture Design, the foundation of further learning in this field.

Due to the overwhelming interest we've had for this program, we will be holding a series of weekend food production intensives in the spring and fall of 2012. Dates, and subjects TBA. In order to learn sustainable living skills, we suggest volunteering or working for your local CSA or local sustainable farmer/dairy/food growing concern. WOOFING can also be an invaluable learning experience. Use the keywords sustainable, and permaculture to refine your search. If the primitive skills sections of our apprenticeship interests you we suggest the Buckeye Gathering: http://www.buckeyegathering.net/, and other gatherings that promote skill sharing.

The Quail Springs farm and garden apprenticeship focuses on building soil, growing and preparing food, learning sustainable ways to harness energy, and build shelter, tending our watershed, and the wild lands that surround us, honoring ourselves and one another, and cultivating a clear vision of our ongoing ability to contribute to vibrant and sustainable systems wherever we are.

Food Forest

Activities include permaculture gardening, farming and earthworks, seed saving, plant propagation, livestock care, milking, cheese making, yogurt, etc., butchering (not required), bread making, food preparation using fresh local ingredients, preserving the harvest, non-profit administration, general chores and community care. We also offer special segments covering a range of areas from natural building and watershed stewardship, to carving, working with natural fibers, beekeeping, cooking in the earthen, and solar ovens, sacred hunting, hide tanning, candle making, intro to medicinal herbs, tincture making, and more.

6 - 8 apprentices are accepted per session. Early application is advised. 2012 sessions are now closed.

Sustainable Vocations prepares youth (ages 15-24) for diverse leadership roles that integrate sustainability into their communities, and provides an experiential introduction to green vocations.
